Chapter 6 That must be the Lord's great power!
Almost all the villagers who were tilling the land were startled by Alex's exclamation and instinctively looked in her direction.
Alex showed no remorse for startling her people; instead, she pointed to the damp farmland beneath her feet.
"It... um... sprouted?"
As Alex finished speaking, the villagers who were mechanically tilling the land looked over, and then there was a thud as someone's wooden hoe fell to the ground.
"It really sprouted!"
"This this this this"
"And it's still growing? How is that possible?"
"My lord, may I ask, what kind of plant seed is this?" Lester, who had spoken with Thorne before, finally mustered his courage and asked tremblingly.
"A magical wheat seed that I invented. I calculated the time it takes for this thing to germinate and mature, which is about 36 hours, or a day and a half."
The moment Thorne finished speaking, a collective gasp of astonishment was heard.
Alex, along with the four villagers working the fields, all took a deep breath, instantly making an outstanding contribution to the photosynthesis process that enabled the plants to absorb carbon dioxide.
"However!" Thorne changed the subject. In order not to disappoint these people later, he still had to say the unpleasant things in advance.
"However, the yield of this wheat is very low. On average, it takes 3 square meters, which means you would need to use a hoe three times to cultivate three plots of land to gather enough for one loaf of bread."
Thorne originally thought this would cool down the passion of these people, but as he expected, the people did not calm down. On the contrary, they remained as silent and restless as a powder keg under the turbulent current.
After all, in other respects he could say that these people were clumsy and apathetic, but when it came to farming, they were the real experts.
No one was more aware than them of just how incredible it was that wheat could be harvested in a day and a half, even if the yield was slightly less than that of ordinary wheat.
It's important to know that ordinary winter wheat takes 7 to 9 months to mature, while summer wheat takes 4 to 5 months. If we were to calculate the yield of ordinary wheat, it would indeed be higher than the wheat we grow now, but the difference is only slight, and it can only be planted once a year.
The wheat grown nowadays sprouts as soon as it's sown and matures in a day and a half. Even though the yield per planting isn't as high as the previous wheat, just three plantings will make up for the difference. If you keep planting, it's pure profit.
As for how much they could harvest, these illiterate villagers who had never studied math had no idea. They only knew that perhaps one day they could realize their dream and eat bread until they were stuffed.
This is a great dream!
To realize this great dream, the people used all their strength to break free from the shock. Their eyes were bloodshot, as if their spirits had squeezed the last bit of vitality and adrenaline from their bodies. They grabbed their hoes and began to cultivate the riverbank.
Alex looked at Thorne in shock at the speed at which they were cultivating the land using human strength, a speed comparable to that of a mechanical tiller: "Won't they run into problems cultivating the land like this?"
"Just average," Thorne said calmly, watching the scene unfold.
"But they haven't eaten for two days," Alex continued.
"...I have to get them to stop right away." After a moment of silence, Thorne hurriedly chased after the people who were constantly transforming into farming machines.
As evening fell, the villagers, who had spent the afternoon gathering berries and wild vegetables at the edge of the forest, returned to the village and witnessed an unbelievable scene.
The river surface shimmered with a cold light at dusk. The riverbank on the opposite bank, which was originally just a clearing overgrown with weeds, was now covered with a vast expanse of semi-ripe square-grain wheat. The lower half of the stems and leaves were yellow and withered, while the upper half was still green, stretching all the way to the far end of the riverbank that they could see.
Besides them, there were also the four villagers who had chosen to cultivate their land at noon, now standing on a bridge, shouting and yelling at the wheat field. One of them looked around, pointed, and chattered, saying something like, "It's ripened a little more."
The man looked over there again and exclaimed, "That wheat is almost ripe!"
And so, these people who chose to go to the forest to pick berries, after only one afternoon away from the village, discovered that they seemed to have missed something very, very important.
As for what's important, it's of course the endless wheat field across the river that looks like it's almost ripe!
They had no time to think about where the wheat field came from or why it had matured to this extent in just one afternoon!
To be honest, when Thorne and Alex first arrived in the village, they did not treat the two men with the respect due to their status as so-called lords.
After all, they've already made a living like that, and they have nothing left to lose. As the saying goes, those with nothing to lose aren't afraid of those wearing shoes; how much worse can things get? The only thing they might do is lose their lives.
After Thorne used his magical ability to fill in everyone's houses, their mindset subtly changed.
At that time, they still did not agree that their village had suddenly gained a lord. However, the farmers' simple sense of morality told them that since this person had built houses for them, they should give something in return, or as a token of gratitude.
Later, they were tasked with cutting down trees in the forest, or gathering berries and wild vegetables in the outer forest. At that time, they did not agree with the sudden appearance of a lord to lead them, but the woman's plan seemed very reliable, so they chose to simply copy it.
Even then, they still harbored a simple, fiery urge: "If you dare to bully me, I'll risk my life to fight you to the death," because they had nothing else to lose but their lives.
Now, seeing the endless wheat field across the river, they suddenly realized that they were not without anything but their lives.
Now, the question that initially lingered in their minds has resurfaced once again.
How did this soon-to-be-ripe wheat field end up here?
If we were to insist on assigning a standard answer to this question, which they cannot even imagine, then there would only be one.
…That must be the great power of the lord!
By now, Thorne was no longer the kind man who helped repair the house, or the unfamiliar carpenter who could be accepted by the village, but another name... Lord.
Thorne, who was sitting on a wooden plank by the river soaking his feet, heard a series of crackling sounds. He turned around and saw the gathering people running like the wind towards the plank bridge.
"What are your thoughts after seeing this? Did you feel something was off? For example, why did they run to the wheat first, instead of you?"
Alex, standing behind him, suddenly asked in a low voice that seemed to enjoy watching a good show.
"That's for the best. If they all came over and said some random thank yous, I'd be embarrassed. I'm easily embarrassed," Thorne said with a shrug. Then he added, "Aren't you going to soak your feet? The river water is quite refreshing."
"Girls' feet don't smell," Alex said casually, taking two bowls of hot soup with berries, wild vegetables, and salt from who-knows-where from a villager behind her. She looked up at the pot in the distance and realized that the two bowls in her hands were the driest.
She handed a bowl to Thorne, who took the soup, glanced at it, took a deep breath, pinched his nose, and slurped it down. Meanwhile, he wondered to himself, "So, the women in this strange world I've transmigrated to don't have sweat glands on their feet? How amazing!"
Alex finished her soup first, then pointed to two wooden houses in the center of the village: "The villagers have prepared two rooms for us, one for each of us. I'm going to sleep now."
Thorne nodded. He planned to continue sitting by the river, soaking his feet, looking at the wheat fields in the distance, and then figuring out where he should start digging through the soil to get rocks and enter the Stone Age the next morning.
After thinking for a while, he decided it wasn't necessary and that it would be better to go to sleep early and start the operation directly the next morning. So, he picked up his shoes, went barefoot into the empty room assigned to him, and closed the door. The door to the next room was suddenly and gently pushed open.
Alex, carrying her boots, tiptoed out, looked around to make sure no one was watching, and then quickly ran towards the river, sitting down on the grass and plunging her feet directly into the icy water.
