Chapter 53 A New Commission [Seeking monthly votes to continue reading]
As an adventurer renowned throughout the kingdom's northern border, Grimm's days are almost entirely filled with all sorts of commissions.
Help clients find items on treasure maps, or clear out thieves and monsters, take money to do the work and take the lives of people who are not exactly good people, and if you're lucky, you may even take command of a few small mercenary groups to harass and attack barbarians and large groups of monsters outside the kingdom's borders.
However, there are occasional exceptions, such as some casual missions that involve no fighting, primarily negotiation, with sightseeing as a secondary activity.
For example, in this mission, Mr. Loren asked me to come to Redstone Village, negotiate with the village chief, deliver a letter, sign some business contracts, and also to study the plan to jointly develop the Upper North Mountain Mine.
He didn't have much of an impression of the name Redstone Village before, but he quickly realized it when he actually got to the road leading to the village.
If nothing unexpected happens, there is only one village in this direction, and I happened to have met two merchants from this village before.
"So this village is called Redstone Village? And it seems like it's doing quite well. I have to say that's a bit of an understatement; it should really be called Redstone Fortress."
Another male elf adventurer traveling with Grimm, named Feng Yu, also sighed at this moment.
After all, not to mention that the trees blocking the way on the path we just came from had obviously been cut down, making the path much easier to walk on, there were also signs pointing the way.
The wall in front of us is an exaggerated scale for a village, and in terms of architectural skill alone, Red Stone Village is definitely at the level of a fortress.
"After all, ever since that undead scourge appeared, almost every village that can protect itself has a few special skills." After saying that, Green thought for a moment, "Maybe it's similar to the villages I've seen before, where the village chief is a spellcaster or a dwarven craftsman with superb architectural skills."
"I think one of your reasons for accepting this mission is to make friends with all sorts of weird people," Feng Yu teased.
"You're one of those weirdos you're talking about, and aren't you pretty much the same?" Green retorted, clearly unconvinced.
"I'm different. I'm not doing this for myself, but to find my family." Feng Yu explained to himself while observing the city wall. However, perhaps because they hadn't concealed themselves, several small black dots soon appeared on the top of the city wall in the distance.
The few small black dots swayed a few times at the top of the city wall, and soon a city wall gate that shouldn't have appeared in an ordinary village was opened from bottom to top.
At least in Green and Fengyu's understanding, the technical difficulty of building such a city gate was not much lower than that of building a city wall.
Even more incredible than the city walls and gates combined was a person who walked out of the city gate, holding a gun in one hand and a shield in the other, running towards them in almost a flash.
But as they got closer, they realized that there was no one person at all; there were six people.
As five of them stood in a row, their shields almost forming a straight wall, their spears were only centimeters away from the two of them.
The leader, however, coldly sized up the two of them.
He carried a spear and shield on his back, held a wooden sign in his hand with a piece of white paper on top, and a charcoal pencil made of charcoal. He looked very professional.
"Name, age, gender, place of origin, occupation, and what are you here for?"
Fortunately, during his time in Leicester, aside from sleeping, eating, and training, he spent his days learning to read with Naro.
Although Naro's schedule was very full, after all, there were only a few literate people in the whole village. Thorne was too busy, Alex was too lazy, and Doug was too incompetent. Naro was the only one left who could teach properly, but he still managed to teach Lester to be a half-baked person who could read and write.
This has been the standard interrogation procedure ever since Raymond came to the village, and to be honest, Lester doesn't like this method.
Ever since he learned what Rain's purpose was in coming to the village, he had developed a strange wariness and hostility towards all outsiders.
After Green answered his question, Lester took notes and pondered for a moment, then looked up.
"Did you lend horses to two merchants in the forest and receive cloth as payment?" Lester suddenly asked.
"Do you think he might be a druid or a spellcaster? Like, maybe he's actually that horse? Or that piece of cloth?" Feng Yu whispered in Green's ear.
“No, he was a human.” Green shook his head, then looked back at Lester: “Yes, I did do that one thing.”
"Hmm..." Lester's coldness melted a little like cream, but he was still mostly serious. Although Green had indeed shown goodwill to him and Doug before, he couldn't judge a book by its cover.
According to the villagers, Raymond initially looked like a normal person.
"So what is the purpose of your visit here?" Lester continued in a businesslike manner.
"I accepted the commission to deliver a message to Redstone Village and, while I'm at it, negotiate with the village chief to see if we can finalize a few business deals." After Green finished speaking, Lester felt more and more that this rhetoric was exactly the same as what Raymond had said.
Although I wasn't there at the time, but...
As Lester pondered this, he beckoned to one of his men to take the interrogation form back to the village chief. Lester then circled around Green and Feng Yu a few times, putting away all the long swords, short swords, shovels, crossbows, axes, and daggers he carried.
Green and his companion had no objections to this; being cautious is always a good thing, and perhaps this is one of the reasons why Redstone Village has been able to survive in the current environment.
Moreover, a village that appears to have clear rules and regulations, strict discipline, and high professionalism is more reassuring to cooperate with, at least much better than those villages where management is chaotic and emotions outweigh reason.
Thinking about this, Green couldn't help but become curious.
What kind of person is the village chief who has transformed a nearly dead village into what it is today?
Curious, Green followed the village warriors through the city gate and into the village.
What comes into view is a smooth stone-paved road and square-shaped things on both sides of the road that look like bushes.
Besides these, there are all sorts of houses in the village. In addition to the fact that all the houses are made of thick materials and have beautiful shapes, another thing is that all the houses look the same.
It gives people a sense of disciplined beauty, like a squad of soldiers standing in neat rows.
