Chapter 1376: Caught in an Ambush
Chapter 1376: Caught in an Ambush
Ye Fan and Zhang Lu moved closer to the dirt road halfway up the mountain and found quite a lot of traces."Judging from the tracks, there are fresh tire marks left by vehicles. Looks like the people from the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps really pulled out." Zhang Lu said, "That also makes sense. The Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps knows we have the upper hand, so they have to pull back their defenses. To keep us from picking them off one by one, they must have transferred everyone to their real nest. This place looks like it’s been emptied out, just an abandoned stockade left behind."
"The biggest source of income for the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps is drugs. Since this is one of their nests, there should be other hidden secrets we haven’t discovered yet." Ye Fan looked at the mountains and forests and said, "We know that in the four major areas, each area is a secret base of the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps. It can’t just be a temporary shelter where a few mercenaries are garrisoned."
"You mean, since this isn’t where Hawk and the others are hiding, it might be a drug manufacturing site, or a planting area for drug crops?" Zhang Lu immediately understood.
Ye Fan said with certainty, "Highly likely. The intel we have may not be one hundred percent accurate, but the general strategy won’t be wrong. Since this is one of our four main targets, there’s no way it’s this simple."
"But the terrain here is complicated, and now it’s empty. Trying to find anything is really like reaching for the sky." Zhang Lu said.
"That’s indeed the case. Maybe the enemy is hiding in some area we can’t see, they’ve gone to ground and are in a submerged state. It’s hard for us to find any useful clues." Ye Fan said calmly, "From what we’ve got so far, we can at least rule out that this is not where Hawk and the others are staying."
Although forcing the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps to shrink their defenses created a huge advantage for wiping out the enemy in one go,
the enemies that were on the surface have withdrawn, and maybe some others stayed behind and went underground. Wanting to uncover more secrets has basically become impossible.
If the enemy stays hidden and refuses to engage, then we can’t find their tracks, and there won’t be much to gain.
"What do we do now? Switch the target to Areas 1, 2, and 3, or keep scouting the situation?" Zhang Lu asked.
After all, their primary targets were the heads of Hawk and the other captains; everything else could be considered secondary.
"We go check out the Wooden Village first. If there really isn’t any major gain, then we’ll have to lock onto the other areas." Ye Fan said.
"Alright!" Zhang Lu didn’t hesitate.
"But we need to be extra careful, so we don’t walk into an ambush." While warning Zhang Lu, Ye Fan also passed the message on to Yang Shu and the others. Naturally, Yang Shu and the rest didn’t dare take it lightly; they treated it like a major enemy was at the gate and prepared themselves to deal with any sudden incident.
Ye Fan and Zhang Lu followed the dirt road toward the Wooden Village.
In the dark, Ma De’s men were closely watching Ye Fan and Zhang Lu’s every move, while also searching for the whereabouts of the others.
"Have you found the other targets yet?" Ma De asked.
The answers from each squad were the same: they hadn’t found any of the other targets.
"No, we can’t just sit here and wait for them to show up. We have to force the unseen targets to reveal themselves." Ma De muttered.
He looked at the figures of Ye Fan and Zhang Lu through his scope.
"Get ready. Once those two enter the Wooden Village, take them out." Ma De ordered. "Remember, don’t give the enemy any chance to breathe. Kill them in one go. But bear in mind, don’t expose all your firepower and positions. Finding the other targets is more important."
"Copy!" Hearing the voices in his earpiece, Ma De’s expression gradually turned cold, killing intent rising and falling.
Just as Ye Fan and Zhang Lu reached the outskirts of the Wooden Village and hadn’t yet stepped into the wooden buildings, Ye Fan’s instincts suddenly screamed. He yanked Zhang Lu and rolled to the side without a second thought. At that moment, deadly bullets sliced through the air, their trajectories exposed in the space they cut through.
It’s no exaggeration to say that four bullets grazed right past Ye Fan and Zhang Lu.
Fortunately, Ye Fan noticed early, sensed the danger, and reacted thanks to his heightened vigilance. On top of that, he had faintly caught the glint of light from a scope, so after factoring everything together, he made a split-second decision to dodge.
Just as the four bullets missed their targets and punched into the ground, Ye Fan and Zhang Lu didn’t stop there; instead, they rushed again toward a boulder within their line of sight.
At the same time, two more bullets whizzed past them.
If they hadn’t been prepared ahead of time, Ye Fan and Zhang Lu would have been hit by now. Even if it didn’t cost them their lives, serious injuries would have been inevitable.
In the blink of an eye, Ye Fan and Zhang Lu hid behind several large rocks, blocking off fire from several directions.
"That was close, way too close. I almost turned into a corpse of jade and incense." Zhang Lu was still shaken, her face a bit lost. Just now, she had completely blanked out. If Ye Fan hadn’t dragged her down to the ground and then, in one smooth motion, practically forced her to hide behind the rocks, she probably wouldn’t have escaped death.
Feeling her pounding heart, she glanced at Ye Fan and quickly said, "You really called it. There really was an ambush."
"The ones who fired just now were all snipers, each with deadly marksmanship." After the initial shock, Ye Fan calmed down and said, "Looks like we’ve run into a strong enemy this time—stronger than when we took care of Black Shark, White Whale, and the Spine Team."
"That strong?" Zhang Lu was stunned.
She had no reason to doubt Ye Fan’s judgment, but these enemies who had suddenly appeared were really too strange. This wasn’t how the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps usually operated. As mercenaries, they wouldn’t rely on sniping to deal with them; they had plenty of other methods.
Besides, the snipers of the Poison Dragon Mercenary Corps weren’t necessarily this good.
She could feel that the other side was the kind of existence forged by countless bullets—a veteran trained year in, year out. In terms of sniper skills, the enemy was even above her. How could she not be shaken by that?
"So who the hell are they?" Zhang Lu was utterly shocked.
"How could we possibly guess that?" Ye Fan gave Zhang Lu a glance while scanning the surroundings and instructed Yang Shu and the others, "Heads up. The enemy snipers are very good, not necessarily weaker than you, maybe even better. Once you lock onto the enemy, shoot immediately. Whether you hit or not, change your sniper position at once, then look for another chance to fire."
Yang Shu and the others had long been on high alert. The moment they saw Ye Fan and Zhang Lu come under attack, they were ready to strike back.
Unfortunately, they hadn’t been able to locate the targets for the moment.
After hearing Ye Fan’s instructions, Yang Shu and the others’ expressions grew even more grave.
Ye Fan would never talk big without reason. If that’s the case, then the situation was dire. This enemy who had popped up out of nowhere was really not to be underestimated. For the moment they still couldn’t figure out who the other side was, and that uncertainty gnawed at them.
