Chapter 30 Mission
Chapter 30 Mission
"I thought you were going to fly me there."
"It's too conspicuous no matter what, I don't want it."
Lin Chaojing refused without hesitation.
Chen Mu actually wanted to say that we're quite conspicuous now.
Inside the subway, the two stood by the door of the last carriage. Chen Mu stood normally, holding the handrail, while Lin Chaojing leaned against it, casually playing on his phone. From the outside, it looked as if they were nestled in each other's arms, like a very good-looking couple, especially Lin Chaojing, who was quite eye-catching.
Today she wore a simple white dress, the hem of which reached her knees, outlining her slender waist. On her feet were a pair of light-colored canvas shoes, revealing the edges of her white socks. She wore no makeup; her clean face showed clear features, smooth skin, and long, flowing hair cascading over her shoulders, held together only by a small silver hair clip.
Although Chen Mu didn't have eyes in the back of his head, he could still feel many burning gazes on his back.
Fortunately, Lin Chaojing wasn't wearing a school uniform. Although he was young, he didn't look like a student at all after dressing up. Otherwise, given the age difference, I would have felt a bit guilty.
Why feel guilty? It's only a two-year age difference, it's normal.
"Won't you be hindered from moving around if you're dressed like that when the fight starts?" Chen Mu shifted his thoughts.
"It transforms! It transforms!"
Lin Chaojing didn't even look up; he was still on his phone, probably contacting people involved in the mission.
She didn't lower her voice when she spoke, as if she didn't care that people on the subway would hear words like "transformation".
That makes sense, Chen Mu thought. If it were him in the past, if he suddenly heard girls around him talking about these things at work, he would probably have assumed it was from a game, anime, or some kind of chuunibyou fantasy. He had always been curious; the magical girls on TV news always wore exaggerated clothes or armor, so those must be their transformed outfits.
If that's the case, where did the clothes you were wearing go? Were they covered up underneath? Or were they temporarily changed?
"There's no need to understand magic so clearly."
Suddenly, Lin Chaojing looked up at him and said.
That smiling expression seemed to see right through his inner doubts.
"..."
Chen Mu silently looked away, and after the subway arrived at the station, he followed her out of the station.
After exiting the subway station, they walked for a while before finally arriving at a magnificent school gate.
The tall, ornate wrought iron gate was tightly closed, its pillars made of pure white marble and topped with exquisite stone carvings.
Chen Mu had heard of this place; it was a well-known private school in the city, supposedly funded by an entrepreneur, with exorbitant tuition fees, making it no exaggeration to call it a prestigious school.
At least back then, he couldn't afford to attend a place like that.
It's the weekend, the school gates are closed, and no students are coming or going.
But a young girl was standing under the eaves and greeted Lin Chaojing.
"Senior."
The girl was wearing the same blazer-style school uniform she had seen before, probably the uniform for this school. The skirt was long, reaching all the way to her knees, and she wore black stockings and leather shoes. She looked a bit younger than Lin Chaojing, as could be inferred from the way she was addressed as "senior." She was pretty, with fair skin, and had the air of a well-bred young lady.
What's particularly striking is her hair color; her short blue hair falls to her shoulders and looks extremely eye-catching.
That wasn't a wig for cosplay, and it didn't look dyed. It swayed gently as she nodded, as if it were naturally like that.
"I'm late, I'm so sorry."
Lin Chaojing spoke casually, showing no sign of regret, and asked the girl, "Is the preparation work complete?"
"It's alright, you've come at the perfect time."
The student girl said earnestly, pointing to the tightly closed school gate: "The students, teachers and other personnel inside have all been evacuated. A temporary ban has been issued, prohibiting anyone from entering or leaving. The barrier has also been activated. Now you can fight with peace of mind. No matter what happens inside, there will be no risk of being exposed."
"Well done." Lin Chaojing nodded in satisfaction.
Chen Mu listened thoughtfully. He'd never heard of the terms "ban" and "barrier" before, and could only speculate on their uses. Perhaps they had the same effect as the magic that locked him in the house—preventing entry and exit and shielding him from observation. No wonder he hadn't heard of magical girls or monsters in the city before.
Does this mean that the area must be evacuated every time, and then a barrier is used to block the view?
Could it be that this has actually happened many times before, but the public is unaware of it?
"Alright, as the squad leader, I'll now assign the tasks."
Lin Chaojing clapped his hands and said, "As the main fighting force, I'm responsible for going in and defeating the monster."
Pointing at the student girl, he said:
"Lu Cai, as the assistant, you are responsible for maintaining the seal of this barrier. If the monster breaks through to the edge of the barrier, drive it back. Under no circumstances should the monster be allowed to leave the school area and enter other parts of the city, otherwise, things will get really bad."
"Yes!" The student nodded vigorously, then hesitated for a moment and said softly, "Senior, don't I need to go in and fight alongside them?"
"No need."
Lin Chaojing waved his hand: "With your current strength, you can't help me. You need to at least reach the [Sprout] level."
Upon hearing this, the young student seemed a little disappointed, but quickly rallied and made up her mind: "I understand! I will try my best!"
Then, Lin Chaojing turned to Chen Mu.
He stood idly to the side, arms crossed.
"I have a mission too?"
"Okay." She walked over and handed Chen Mu her handbag and phone, which she had brought with her when she left. "Your job is to keep these safe for me. Don't lose them."
"Okay." Chen Mu didn't say much more, feeling completely treated like a tool.
At that moment, the female student suddenly asked, "Um...that."
"Um?"
"who is he?"
She finally couldn't help but ask a question.
This time, my senior suddenly brought a strange man here, and I have no idea what's going on! This is an important battleground for magical girls, okay? Why would an unrelated person be here?! And they even came together...!
"Oh, I forgot to introduce myself." Lin Chaojing laughed and patted his head.
She introduced one sentence on the left, then another on the right:
"This is Chen Mu, and this is Lu Cai. Okay, you've met. Now I'm giving you a new task: protect him during this time."
"Eh... eh?"
Lu Cai hadn't even reacted yet. What was the point of such a simple introduction? Was there nothing besides the name? She still didn't understand!
But she couldn't ask her senior to explain further; the monster was still rampaging on campus, and they couldn't afford to delay any longer.
They could only watch as Lin Chaojing slowly walked towards the school gate.
She began her transformation.
